3D printing, also called additive manufacturing, is the construction of a three-dimensional object from a CAD model or a digital 3D model. It can be done in a variety of processes in which material is deposited, joined or solidified under computer control, with the material being added together (e.g. plastics, liquids, or powder grains being fused), typically layer by layer.
Put simply 3D printing is using a machine (a 3D printer) to make 3d objects out of plastic.
3D printing works by 'extruding' molten plastic out of a small nozzle in a pre-detirmed pattern. It works in layers so once the first layer is done, the 3D printer's nozzle moves up slightly, prints the next layer and repeats.
I have 2 modern 3D printers that I can and do use to make anything from replacement parts for something that has broken to bespoke accessories for UK companies. I the skills necessary to design components for 3d printing using Solidworks (a computer aided design (CAD) software).
